Anxiety in the Chicago Suburbs: 7 Nervous-System-Friendly Ways to Find Relief

Anxiety isn’t just ‘in your head.’ Often it’s your nervous system doing its best to protect you.

Here are seven gentle, nervous-system-friendly practices you can try—especially if you live in the Chicago suburbs and life feels nonstop.

1) Name what’s happening

Try: ‘My body is in protection mode right now.’ Naming reduces shame and increases choice.

2) Orient to safety

Slowly look around the room and notice 5 neutral or pleasant details. Let your eyes move, not just your thoughts.

3) Lengthen the exhale

A simple pattern: inhale 4, exhale 6—repeat for 2–3 minutes.

4) Add supportive pressure

Place a hand on your chest or cheek. Gentle pressure can cue safety.

5) Reduce ‘all-or-nothing’ demands

Ask: ‘What’s one small next step that’s kind?’

6) Get curious about the anxious part

In IFS, anxiety can be a protector. You can ask internally: ‘What are you afraid would happen if you didn’t worry?’

7) Consider support

If anxiety is impacting sleep, relationships, or work, therapy can help you build steadier regulation over time.

Local note

If you’re in South Barrington or nearby suburbs, in-person therapy may be an option. Telehealth is also available for Illinois residents.
